Pumping Up Your Blood Pressure Management

Thank you for joining me on this journey. My name is Jason Youngs and on December 9, 2022 I found out I have Coronary Artery Disease. I decided to document my journey to recovery on TikTok. It adds accountability for me, as well as an opportunity to educate others, while I educate myself. I use words and concepts that are easily understood. Are you someone who is worried about your blood pressure?


If so, you're not alone. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a major risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD) - a serious condition that affects the blood vessels of the heart and is a leading cause of death worldwide.


High blood pressure, or hypertension, is when the force of your blood against the walls of your blood vessels is too high. This can cause serious problems, like coronary artery disease, which can affect the blood vessels in your heart and lead to death.

It is never too late to make positive changes to improve your blood pressure and reduce your risk of CAD.


There are a few things you can do to help lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of coronary artery disease. First, you should try to eat a healthier diet that includes more whole foods and plant-based proteins, and less processed and packaged foods. You should also try to eat less salt and add more fruits and vegetables to your diet.


In addition to changing your diet, you should try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise every day. This can help improve your blood pressure and overall health. I monitor my heart rate at the gym with a heart rate monitor like this Amazon Halo View Fitness Monitor.


You should also try to manage your stress. Practice relaxation techniques: This can include activities like deep breathing, meditation, or progressive muscle relaxation. These techniques can help you calm your mind and body, and reduce the physical symptoms of stress. Next, make time for enjoyable activities. It's important to take breaks and do things that you enjoy, as this can help you relax and feel more positive. This could be anything from reading a book or watching a movie, to spending time with loved ones or pursuing a hobby.


MEDICATION MAY BE PART OF THE SOLUTION


Finally, you should talk to your healthcare provider about whether taking medications could be helpful for managing your blood pressure.


If you are looking to improve your blood pressure, there are several medications that can help. It is important to work with your healthcare provider to determine the right medication and dosage for you.


My PCP prescribed Diovan for me, many years ago. Before medication, my blood pressure was typically 140 something over 90 or so. Diovan (Valsartan) has brought my blood pressure down to around 120/80.

Even if you are taking medication to improve your blood pressure, it is still important to make lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy diet, increasing physical activity, and reducing stress.


These common sense measures can help to further lower your blood pressure and improve your overall health. So, what can you do to improve your blood pressure?


From my experience, here are the 5 best actions you can take to reduce your blood pressure!

  • Eat a healthy diet that is rich in whole foods and low in salt, processed foods, and saturated fats.

  • Increase your physical activity by getting at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise every day.

  • Avoid tobacco products and limit your alcohol consumption.

  • Work with your healthcare provider to determine if medications may be necessary to manage your blood pressure.

  • Reduce stress through relaxation techniques such as journaling, deep breathing and meditation. I use this Beautiful People” Health Heart Journal from Amazon.

Remember, improving your blood pressure is a long-term process that requires commitment and consistency. It may take some time to see results, but by making healthy lifestyle choices and working closely with your healthcare provider, you can successfully lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of CAD.
